THERE was a summit meeting with a difference yesterday at Trump Turnberry.

Former US president Donald Trump had checked in at the plush golf resort he now owns at the same time as the venue was playing host to Celtic legend John Hartson’s Hartson Foundation charity golf day.

Big-hearted former Hoops star Hartson has raised more than £1.2m for various cancer charities and ex-Hoops and West Ham man McAvennie is a regular at his events.

So it was yesterday as his involvement took him into the orbit of the larger than life ex-president – who faces criminal charges in the US, which he denies – as he jetted in to Scotland.

They’re both big characters – and they came into close contact in very genteel circumstances in one of the foyers of Trump Turnberry.

McAvennie shared an image of Trump on social media, along with the words: “Can’t believe this guy said to me how did you miss that 3 foot putt 🤔

Fans were enthused by the meeting of minds, with one asking: “Where’s the birdies?”

Another wrote: “Trump and Franky bhoy is a night out in anyone’s books.”

The former President – who announced his intention late last year to stand for re-election in 2024 – later pointed to a fan wearing a Donald mask and told the crowd: “I like that guy”.

As Trump headed onto the course with his own caddy, he stopped for a chat at the third hole.

Taking a swing, he turned to journalists and locals, asking: “That looked good, right?

“The swing looked good, everything perfect.” But he joked: “Just don’t follow the ball.”

Trump even retook a shot so photographers could get their perfect snap.

Afterwards, he bragged: “That’s on the green, thank you.

“Are you surprised to see that kind of power? I think so.”

The 76-year-old was flanked by cops and security as he played, watched by an eager crowd. Officers on horseback also patrolled nearby beaches.

Hoops hero Hartson, 48, whose foundation raises money for testicular cancer awareness, told The Scottish Sun that the President was joining them “for dinner to give a speech about his love of golf.

He was also hopefully “giving out lifetime memberships, hopefully to some of the boys.”

Trump superfan Bill Harland, 66, from Stirling, travelled to Ayrshire

Trump’s late mum Mary MacLeod is from the isle of Lewis, in the Hebrides.

He visited his Menie Estate resort in Aberdeenshire on Monday and is heading to his Doonbeg golf course in Ireland.

The former President sparked a security operation on a 2018 visit, with protests in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
